Sam Vokes gives an update on Joe Allen’s injury

Stoke City striker Sam Vokes has said that he has been in regular contact with Joe Allen since he suffered his Achilles injury in March. The Welsh midfielder has been a key member of the Potters squad but he won’t take any part for the rest of the season after sustaining the horrendous injury in the 5-1 win over Hull City.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Vokes said that he has been speaking regularly with his compatriot. He added that Allen was expected to miss out on the European Championship this summer but the postponement of the competition has done good for him, he told: “I speak to Joe regularly, I think he’s doing very well.

He picked up a horrendous injury tearing his Achilles but as mad as it is, he’s not missed a minute since that game. Obviously with the Euros he’s a major part for Wales as well and hopefully he’s going to be fit by the time it comes around now. As bad as it is to pick up an injury like that, he’s got this time to rest up and do his rehab and I’m sure he’ll be ready and fighting fit… well, goodness knows but when we’re all back playing again!”

Stoke have not played a single game since the 5-1 triumph over Hull and that has been due to the league’s suspension because of the coronavirus outbreak. A restart on June 20 has been mentioned through the media and it remains to be seen whether that becomes the case. Stoke are currently three points ahead of the drop zone after their revival under manager Michael O’Neill.

They will be hoping to sustain the form after the shutdown in order to stay clear of the relegation places. The Staffordshire outfit were able to go unbeaten for four straight games (two wins and two draws) before the unexpected break.
